WELCOME TO E4 GROWS
Hi, I’m Teresa, founder of E4 Grows. We grow fresh, pesticide and herbicide-free fruit and vegetables for our local food bank using the no-dig method — helping fight food poverty right here in our community and supported by our team of volunteers.
It began in lockdown when I donated our surplus produce. The food bank asked us to keep going as demand soared during the cost-of-living crisis. With a few vacant allotment plots, three amazing volunteers, and a lot of community spirit, we got planting.
Today, we’re still growing — but now we fund seeds, plants, tools, and plot rent ourselves. Every penny and every helping hand keeps fresh food on local plates.
OUR BODY CARE
At E4 Grows we aim to use all aspects of the produce we grow, so no seed or pip wasted. Together with Anna, my side-kick, we take any surplus food and create our beautiful Body Care products.
All profits made from the sale of our Body Care products is invested back into growing organic fruit and vegetables for the community.

About me
Hi there, I’m Teresa! I’ve been hooked on growing veg since I was 7. When my family moved from an East London slum to our first home, our neighbour — a master of beans and tomatoes — took me under his wing. A vegetable gardener was born!
My hero was Geoff Hamilton, champion of organic, “make-do and mend” gardening. Thanks to him, I’ve always grown naturally — no pesticides, no herbicides, just healthy soil and happy plants.
In 2006, I took on my first allotment in North East London. It was hard work, but the harvest made a real dent in our food bill. Only later did I realise I’d been practising Charles Dowding's “no-dig” gardening method all along — feeding the soil so it could feed us.
I’ve lived in North Chingford for 30 years and Waltham Forest for 60, growing fruit and veg for most of that time. For the past 14 years, I’ve tended my allotment organically, working towards self-sufficiency.
OUr food
E4 Grows was established in 2021, and it hasn’t been easy – each season brings battles with weather, pests, and plant diseases like late blight. No two years are ever the same, and with climate change, future challenges are inevitable.
Nevertheless, we continue to grow and give, gifting on average £6,000 worth of produce each season, always striving to increase that impact.
We grow a wide range of vegetables and some fruit, from radishes to sweet potatoes, to support our diverse community. Our food helps 85 families and over 170 individuals every week through the food bank. Our main partner, the Highams Park Hub – established during lockdown – opens Mondays and Thursdays, 11am–1pm, for collections. The Highams Park Hub is more than a food bank for local people, it’s also a cafe offering meals, debit advice, community support.
To help fund our work, Teresa and Anna create seasonal body care products, preserves, and chutneys from our harvest—marmalade, quince jelly, chilli jelly, green tomato and beetroot chutneys, along with heirloom tomatoes and fresh cherries. Each year’s offer varies with the seasons, discoveries, and the energy of our small team.
We also sell pure raw honey from allotment hives, raising funds for E4 Grows while supporting a local beekeeper.
Our Body Care
Hi, I’m Anna, Teresa’s side-kick. I create the body care element of E4 Grows!
It all began with a simple idea: to make more of the beautiful plants we grow. One evening, while watching Gardeners’ World, I saw a woman making body care products with flowers from her garden. Her creativity inspired me to try it too.
I started with soap making, experimenting with calendula, rose, chamomile, daisies, and dandelion from our garden. The soaps smell divine, feel luxurious, and leave skin soft and nourished.
From there, the possibilities kept growing. I now make:
🫧 Soaps
💋 Lip balms
🌱 Skin-healing salves
🧴 Lotions
🌸 Face and hand creams
All are made with natural ingredients – almond and olive oils, shea and cocoa butter, local honey, and beeswax. No synthetic additives, just pure, skin-loving goodness.
Every penny we earn from these products goes straight back into E4 Grows, helping our team continue the vital work of growing fresh food for local people in need. The community has been wonderfully supportive, buying our products and spreading the word.
We hold annual sales and share updates when new batches are ready. Keep an eye out for announcements on how to purchase and support our mission.
Our Growers
Our Growers are a small group of dedicated volunteers who grow a variety of vegetables and fruits, all of which are donated to our local food bank.
We rely on the generous support of our community—whether financial, practical, or through volunteering—especially during the busy summer months. No gardening experience is needed to get involved; but if you do have gardening skills or can drive, that’s a real bonus.
Currently, we meet on Mondays and Thursdays, and we’re always happy to welcome new hands to help our work thrive.

“I was a complete beginner at growing vegetables and having learned so much in this first season. It’s is so satisfying being able to produce beauty vegetables for the food bank. Very often no fresh food is provided by Food Banks or is offered approaching its sell by date. Whereas we harvest our veg and deliver within half an hour. I have made new friends and enjoy the whole experience of working with others and learning from them. We also have a lot of fun.”

“I first volunteered on the allotment because I thought it was so important that people needing to use a foodbank received some healthy fresh produce not just tins and packets. I also enjoy being out in the fresh air gardening. I soon discovered even more benefits such as belonging to a new friendship group with similar interests and learning about the crop growing cycles of the changing seasons and no dig organic gardening.”

“It is great to be involved in such a worthwhile and essential project. We also get so much from it: friendship, enjoying outdoors space and valuable learning experience. It’s a win-wins here”

“It was always my plan to volunteer in retirement or take on part-time work, but I wasn’t sure how to start. My son suggested getting an allotment, knowing how much I enjoy growing fruit and vegetables — I knew managing a plot alone would be too much. Then my neighbour got a plot and invited me to visit. I was instantly captivated. A few weeks later, I put my name down to be a volunteer. The rest is history. At E4Grows, we’re a fantastic team—working hard, sharing laughs, and supporting the local community with fresh produce. I’ve found purpose, connection, and no longer worry about feeling isolated in retirement.”

Help E4 Grows
E4 Grows is a small, not-for-profit community project run by local people, for local people. We don’t qualify for most grants, so we fund ourselves.
In our early days, unused allotment plots meant free rent — but now we pay rent, buy materials, and keep the garden growing year-round. We raise funds through our annual Plant & Cake Sale, occasional Autumn Pop-Up, and by selling homegrown produce, preserves, local honey, and handmade herbal body care.
Thanks to some community ward funding grants from the council, we’ve been able to buy kit like propagators and season extenders. Local businesses have contributed too — from worktops and pallets to timber for raised beds.
What We Sell
Throughout the year, we offer a selection of handmade and homegrown items:
Preserves and chutneys
Local honey
Fresh vegetables
All made with love—and with herbs and flowers grown right here on our plots.
Local Support
We’re incredibly grateful for donations from individuals and local businesses. Recent gifts include:
A worktop for our tea and coffee station from Magnet Highams Park
Pallets for compost bins from Selco
Wood for raised beds from Harts and Essex Lofts
These contributions make a huge difference—and show how many ways there are to support our work.
How To Help
Whether it’s a raffle prize, a donation, or simply buying our handmade goods—every bit of support helps us grow.
